Project #2

750-word Draft

Coming to UNE, I didn’t have any idea which major I was going to pursue. I’m not really the kind of person that makes decisions ahead of time, and in this case, I didn’t even make the decision on my major at all before I came here. I got recruited here to play hockey so that’s what I am focused on. This is a really good D3 school to go to if you are a player pursuing pro hockey which is what I am doing. Maybe I only think that because hockey is pretty much the only thing I have ever really cared about. My whole life, friends, family, acquaintances that I have are because of hockey and the sacrifices my parents made for me to play hockey growing up. I don’t exactly plan on making a career out of hockey but it would be fun to continue playing as I am heading into my mid to late twenties after school and make a couple bucks along the way. But aside from pro hockey, I will likely not be playing for long enough and probably wouldn’t be making enough money to the point where I don’t need to work after I retire, so I need to get a degree in business to fall back on. The world we live in revolves around business, and with that, the job prospects are endless for someone who can obtain a degree in business.

The Business Administration at UNE offers a wide range of courses to take for Business which is the major that I wish to pursue.  In Ernest Boyer’s “The Enriched Major,” he states that “ By an enriched major we mean encouraging students not only to explore a field in-depth but also help them put their field of study in perspective” (Boyer 223). Business is integrated everywhere. And because of this, it’s probably the broadest major you can take because you see the art of business in all aspects of life. For example, your friend wants to buy one of your XBOX controllers from you because he broke his raging over FIFA. Or, one of your drunk friends asks you to pick him up from a party. That’s just the right thing to do. But in return, you would expect them to do the same thing, and they would surely be willing to do it considering what you’ve done for them. That’s business! Providing a product or service to someone for money, products, or services in return. With those examples being said, I feel like it’s easy to see how heavily the concept of business is engrained in our culture (human culture). Everything that you do in public usually includes some aspect of business. You want to go out and eat with your friends? You have to buy the food that you will be eating.  You want to go to a baseball game? You have to buy tickets. Business is a part of human nature and there’s no getting around it. If you want to do anything outside of your own home, you have to pay a price.

Business is such a highly valuable major to have nowadays as many employers are seeking potential employees that have acquired a major in business. Boyer explains that “The director of career development at one college told us she had talked with an executive at the local manufacturing plant about placing a bright English major. The executive said he would not even talk to the woman until she had taken some business courses” (Boyer 219). I believe that getting a major in business would be an enriched experience because of how prevalent business is in the modern day; meaning that because so much of our lives revolve around businesses, and there is so much emphasis on social interactions, there is surely a wide variety of valuable things and life skills to learn from business courses and being in the field as well. Ernest Boyer states that “Today, business is the most popular field of undergraduate study (Boyer 219).” And on top of that, there are tons of different courses you can take in business including: Innovation through Technology, Management, Business and Society relations, Management of Non-Profit Organizations, Legal environment of Business, etc. The amount of job possibilities for someone with a degree in business is endless and I think that attributes to the fact that every company is a business that intends to make money or at least has a business side to it.

This relates to my point that there is limitless potential for opportunity in business because material things that are needed for organizations, whether they are seeking to make profit or not, costs money. And business and money obviously go hand in hand. Math adds up.

Business can take pretty much any form you can think of. If there is something that you might be passionate about selling and you think that there would be a demand or market for whatever it is that you’re trying to do, it is possible to make money. From the standpoint of a business owner, it can be tough in today’s world to make the money that they most desire. With the cost of property, plumbing, taxes, inflation and so on, it can be an insurmountable task to make profit. But at the end of the day, it takes hard work and determination to accomplish almost anything of worth but is made possible through those things. If I were to pursue business as my major, which I am, I would want to pursue a career in it.

With such a wide variety of careers in business to pursue, I feel confident that I will get a job that I desire. UNE offers a huge selection of business classes to choose from which makes me feel even more confident that I will find one of the many potential job opportunities that those specific business courses can open given you take something away from the courses and apply yourself. To conclude, I believe that business is an essential part of life. It’s so fundamental to humans to partake in business that I feel like it’s a no-brainer for me to take business as my major. Materials are exchanged for other materials or favors and that’s just the way she goes. And as my boy Lil Baby once said, “Business is business so Ima get paid.”
