MY BEST ADVICE:
Hi Henry,
Great speech. I didn’t know how much preparation goes into getting certain cameras ready to use but I learned that today haha. I thought that your directions were easy to understand and it seems like you know your stuff when it comes to cameras which probably helped you articulate your directions so well. However, I think it would be even easier to follow your instructions if your face was in the shot. Other than that, great job!
WHY IT’S MY BEST ADVICE
This was my best advice because I think it’s important to be able to see the person who is giving instructions. Even though we can hear the speaker, the visual aspect helps the listener comprehend the instructions better through the speaker’s body language and expressions. The cameras in the shot were important but the speaker’s face is just as important as the subject of the video.
BEST ADVICE FROM MY PEERS
“Sam, thanks for sharing your speech-I liked your bold greeting and introduction. I loved the guessing game aspect that you incorporated in the beginning of the speech-it caught my attention immediately. You also displayed a very casual, easy-going manner, which worked with the content of your speech. I did notice a couple of small things for improvement that I think could enhance your speech. First, you displayed a lot of back and forth movements, which distracted me from what you were saying. Also you had some umms in between words that I think could be eliminated through some additional rehearsal. Thanks for letting me give you my feedback and keep up the good work!”
WHY IT’S THEIR BEST ADVICE
This is the best advice that I received because she gave me some positive feedback to start and then gradually got to the things that she thought I could improve on. She pointed out something that I’ve always noticed that I do, which is moving my head and body around too much while I’m speaking. But had never been called out for it as being distracting, and I improved on that in my next speech. She also pointed out that I was saying umm a lot which is a really hard habit to break but I don’t even notice myself saying umm most of the time so it was nice to have somebody tell me that I could improve on that.
Final Speech Outline
- I should pass this class
- I started from the bottom, now we here
- I started out with a lot of bad habits as one would expect from an amateur speech-giver
- But I improved with the help of my own self-reflection and feedback from peers
- Being involved with a group helped me see what others were doing better than me and that helped me improve my own abilities
- I significantly improved my body language in front of the camera
- Feedback from peers helped me go from looking timid to looking confident and composed
- I thought I was already good at speaking alone, but this class helped me realize that there is a lot more that goes into effective public speaking than just the speaking alone.
- I want to thank all of my peers for their honest and sincere feedback on my work and I hope that they will appreciate mine.
Final Journal #11
After completing my final speech, I can honestly say that I thought I did well. I prepared a good outline that was very detailed even though it’s recommended that they are not that way, but that’s just the only way that my brain lets me do them. My speech was a good length and I thought that I was composed with my body language in front of the camera. I gave an honest reflection on how I thought that the class went for me and that was that I improved my speaking ability not just in front of the camera for my speeches, but outside of class as well. I found that the difficulty of coming up with 3-4 sentences on what my peers could improve on helped me get better at problem solving because I had to come up with a certain amount of words to meet the requirement. As for the speech, I thought that I got my point across well and convinced the audience that I should pass the class. Some things that I could have done better however, were that I said umm a few times, I moved my head in an odd manner once or twice, and I did that weird swallow thing once.
